Taste of BSM-Spring 2021 Online Learning Opportunity
BSM is excited to offer a no-tuition, non-credit Spring 2021 online learning opportunity during this challenging time as our in-person study abroad program was canceled due to COVID-19. NEW: BSM is also offering the option to take up to two courses for credit with home school approval (Details below).
Although we hope to welcome students back to a full program in the near future, we have made the decision to use some of our reserves to provide this opportunity to students who are passionate about mathematics and are willing to take on extra work in addition to their regular classes this fall. It is also an opportunity for our organization to continue to support our exceptional teacher-scholars in Hungary who have been affected by the closure of our tuition supported program.
We are accepting applications from undergraduate students and recent graduates of North American Colleges and Universities in the Math Community to participate in this online small group enrichment program. Students will have the opportunity to enroll in up to two advanced math courses taught by our BSM Professors in Hungary. If you have some extra time while at home or at school in the spring, think about a virtual BSM class.
Eligibility: BSM prerequisite is to have successfully completed either Abstract Algebra or Real Analysis. (or both)
Non-credit, no-tuition courses: BSM is not charging tuition or issuing transferable credit to your home school. However, there will be a small enrollment fee ($100.00 per course) to reserve a space in a course and you may enroll in up to two courses. Upon completion of your studies each student who successfully completes the course will receive a BSM Gradesheet (non-credit) and a BSM t-shirt (U.S. Addresses). Participation in this program can be listed on graduate school applications or CV/resumes for internships.
Credit bearing courses: BSM is offering these same courses for credit with a tuition fee of $950.00 (with the $100 enrollment fee applied to this cost) per course. Check with your home school for approval. BSM will issue an official transcript for these math courses. Students may change their course from non-credit to credit after classes begin with BSM and home school approval.
The Spring 2021 online courses and their descriptions can found on the Hungarian webpage of BSM: http://www.bsmath.hu/CURRENT/Courses.html.
Although we ask at your application your preferred course list, the first week of classes will be a shopping period for students to analyze which courses would best fit with their interests and change registration choices.
While no Undergraduate Research is offered in the Spring 2021 semester, we are happy to announce that there will be an online Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program offered in Summer 2021, similar to last summer’s, due to its success. Check back for details in early May 2021.
- Courses are 90 minutes each day and will be held either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday. Schedule: https://www.bsmath.hu/CURRENT/Schedule.html
- An optional Hungarian Plus class (language, culture and society) will be offered for those who are interested and is scheduled for after the meeting of the regular math courses. No cost and no credit for this class but you will receive a letter grade on your final gradesheet.
Course Delivery/Tech Requirement
BSM uses Zoom for online meetings. You do not need to have a Zoom account in order to participate. However, you will have to download a Zoom app to your device, in order to be able to connect to class meetings. We strongly encourage all students to have access to high quality internet and a computer with webcam and microphone.

Limited Course Capacity
In order to maintain a small interactive experience, we are limiting the enrollment to 8-10 students per class. Should demand for courses exceed our limits, we may offer additional sections/courses.
Students will be notified by email. Each student will pay an enrollment fee of $100 per course to secure a place in the course. Upon completion of the course, the student will receive a BSM gradesheet (useful for those planning to attend graduate school who may wish to communicate their performance informally to graduate program admissions), and a BSM logo shirt (within the U.S.).
Non-credit courses: A $100 per course enrollment fee is payable (after acceptance) to Budapest Semesters with an invoice from BSM using Paypal.
Tuition cost for credit bearing courses: $950.00 with your $100 enrollment fee applied to this total. The remaining balance due will be $850.00.
